
Tony began working for Polk County at 21 in environmental sanitation and restaurant inspection. He first ran for elected office at age 24. He’s the son of an Italian immigrant and grew up in Des Moines’s Little Italy neighborhood. Tony is currently the ranking member of the Senate State Government Committee, and serves on the Judiciary, Transportation, and Labor & Business Relations Committees Tony has lived on the Southside of Des Moines his whole life. After taking a break politics, Tony is back in the Senate, in his second term representing Downtown and the Southside. He served three terms in the Iowa House of Representatives 1986 – 1994. Tony Bisignano was elected in 2014 to the Iowa Senate, where he represents Downtown and the Southside of Des Moines. Tony was recently awarded the Friends of the Asian & Latino Coalition Award, and plans on being an active member of the coalition for many years to come. Tony is currently active in the SouthSide Cares charitable organization. After Nick died in a car accident as a teen, Tony started the Nick Bisignano Foundation to promote responsible choices among young people. In all his time serving as an elected official, Tony never left his family and the Southside.

Tony and Kim, his wife of 42 years, raised three children, Emily, Allison, and Nick. He served seven years as president of his local AFSCME union. He was a policy advisor and project manager for 17 years with Polk County, and then Human Resources director. After taking a break from politics, Tony is back in the Senate, in his second term representing Downtown and the Southside.

He served three terms in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1986 – 1994.
